“Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.” ~Harriet Beecher Stowe

You’re cruising along, crushing your goals, feeling good, feeling proud… when all of a sudden….

ROADBLOCK!

Some unexpected obstacle gets in your way.

This is the point where most people give up. They call it a failure. They say it’s too hard. They take it as a sign from the universe that they’re on the wrong path.

They quit.

Roadblocks are frustrating and disheartening. They activate a ton of fear and self-doubt. Your inner critic starts chiding and  you feel like a failure. But here’s the thing to remember: obstacles are inevitable! They’re part of the process. You’re way ahead of the game when you accept this fact.

The truth is, the biggest obstacle you’ll face is yourself. The best thing you can do when you hit a bump in the road is to keep going. By all means, pause and honor the difficult emotions that arise, then get up, dust yourself off and get back to it. Don’t let your mind trick you into believing that a setback is a sign of incompetence or hopelessness. That’s simply the voice of fear playing games with you. Push past it and re-route yourself.

Create accountability in some way. For example, tell people your goal, enlist a friend to help keep you on track, or give yourself a deadline. Write about the problem and brainstorm possible solutions. Write down WHY your goal matters to you revisit this on a regular basis to keep you connected to the bigger picture. Celebrate small success. The reward of acknowledgment will help you stay motivated. Whatever you do, keep moving…. And don’t forget to have some fun along the way!
